These include Joby Babu, former head of Aircel’s value-added services. Nimbuzz has recently hired several senior executives from Aircel and Nokia to add bandwidth to its India operations. “India being a large market allows testing and experimentation of new products that can be rolled out in other global markets including US and Europe within a month or two,” Saxena said.
The social networking chat app has identified India as an effective test-bed for new products, like a chat app for tablets, and partnerships with local telecom companies.
Nimbuzz has already moved key functions like product management and engineering on devices to India, while the technology development will remain in Rotterdam and Argentina. A handful will also move to the company’s Argentina office.
Of the 80 employees in Rotterdam office, some have been asked to move to India, while 50 will stay back in the chief technology officer’s team. The company plans to add to its India headcount, where it has about 70 people. Nimbuzz, which began commercial operations in 2008, has about 170 employees working out of Rotterdam, Delhi and Argentina.
